MOTHERLAND: A BENEFIT FOR BOBBIE AND JEANNIE. FEAT. APOLLO COBRA+ VERSKOTZI + ASTROBEARD
MOTHERLAND: A Benefit for Bobbie and Jeannie
Fighting cancer with music from Apollo Cobra, Verskotzi, and Astrobeard

It is astonishing just how quickly a life's course can be altered. In the course of just six months, two longtime friends, caring mothers, and artistic souls were dealt some of the worst news imaginable. In January of this year, Roberta "Bobbie" Anderson was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, and was soon undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatments and scheduling a harrowing bone marrow transplant. In the spring, Jeannie Piekoswhose son, Nathan, grew up with and is still close friends with Bobbie's son, Marklearned that she had a rare form of endometrial cancer, and over the course of just 10 days underwent emergency surgery and began a nine-week chemotherapy treatment.
These sudden, back-to-back diagnoses sent a shockwave through Bobbie and Jeannie's families and circles of friends. The costs of cancer arise in myriad ways; it wreaks havoc emotionally, mentally, and physically, in addition to the obvious financial difficulties that arise from being unable to work and facing one trip to the hospital after another. As Bobbie and Jeannie continue their treatments, it has become clear to their children that outside help is needed. Hence: MOTHERLAND: A Benefit for Bobbie and Jeannie, a benefit concert presented by Rock the Cause at Icehouse on Friday, August 22.
This special show will be headlined by Apollo Cobra with support from Joey Verskotzi and a cameo from Bobbie's son-in-law and his band, Astrobeard.
In addition to live music, this affordable gig will include a silent auction with amazing items donated by local businesses including Atomic Data, Do It Green!, Town Hall Brewery, Indeed Brewing, Dangerous Man Brewing, North Star Roller Girls, Blue Door Longfellow, Pumphouse Creamery, Blue Moon Coffee, Bag-E-Wash, KFAI, and 89.3 The Current.
The benefit aims to not only raise money to help with the unexpected costs of cancer treatment but to rally around two women when they need it most. As Bobbie said recently, the benefit isn't just raising money to pay a few medical bills: "You're buying me time."
About the Moms
Bobbie Anderson (Caring Bridge page; Fundly page) has spent a lifetime working for non-profits. She is an avid fan of Doris Day, loves dogs, and has always thought of herself as a woods-woman. She is madly in love with her husband Jerry, and is the proud mother of two children, Mark Myers and Meredith Myers-Petro.
Jeannie Piekos (Caring Bridge page) is an award-winning poet, video producer, script writer, and arts organizer who loves her three children, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, three grandchildren, and her "wonderful, sometimes funny, mostly patient husband." Jeannie was a co-founder and co-director of the Powderhorn Writers Festival and her poetry and videos have been featured throughout the state and in national and local literary magazines.

About the Bands
Apollo Cobra is an explosive analog synth band that brings a party with them wherever they go. The title of their spacey, expansive 2012 album Motherland was the inspiration for the name of this event, and the band has generously agreed to headline this event at Icehouse. It will be one of their only local gigs this summer (they haven't performed in the Twin Cities since tearing up the stage at Pride) and will be a rare chance to catch the band in such an intimate space. Bring your dancing shoes, because Apollo Cobra will fully expect you to get down.
Verskotzi is a melodic pop quartet fronted by singer-songwriter Joey Verskotzi. L'etoile Magazine's Jon Hunt describes Verskotzi as, "an old-school singer-songwriter, that beautifully dying breed of chrysalis that used to dominate the rock universe," and described last year's Lemon Heart as, "magnificently developed, with the promise of even better to come." As attendees at Verskotzi's previous shows at Icehouse can attest, this will be the perfect setting to witness his majestic and magnetic power-pop.
Astrobeard is a new space-rock collaboration between Eric Hans King, Peter Maccaroni, Josh Van Heuvein, and Ben Myers-Petro. Ben is Bobbie's son-in-law, and he is excited to warm up the stage for this special concert with a short cameo set.
