INTRO TO URBAN AGRICULTURE: A SURVEY OF THE BENEFITS, CHALLENGES AND DIVERSE SYSTEMS OF GROWING FOOD IN CITIES
Anastasia Cole Plakias, a Co-Founder of Brooklyn Grange, will lead a survey of the different urban agricultural models cropping up in contemporary cities.  Taking place in the multipurpose room at the Brooklyn Navy Yard's Building 92 Museum and Exhibition Center, as well as up on the farm, Anastasia's talk will cover a range of topics, including: the various goals and benefits of urban agriculture; different business entities a budding urban farmer might consider; the range of physical models -- from vertical farms to aquaponics, and of course rooftop farming -- and their respective pros and cons; the benefits and challenges associated with various urban spaces; integration into the urban ecosystem; different enterprises, from flowers to bees to mushrooms, found on urban farms, and recommendations on which enterprises and crops make most sense and are most profitable; permits and licensing, and more!  Handouts will provide further resources on particularly rich areas that we are not able to delve into thoroughly in the time alloted.

We recommend this survey equally to anyone generally interested in urban ag, from urban planners and architects to environmental scientists, developers and community organizers alike, as well as those who hope to launch their own agricultural endeavor in a big city!

SCHEDULE:
6pm - 7:15pm: Presentation in the Multipurpose room
7:15pm: Bathroom break
7:30 - 8:00pm: Farm tour: a walking case study
8:00pm - 8:30pm: Q&A and discussion*

*Feel free to bring some food for yourself to eat during this time!  We love eating, too, and we realize that this course takes place smack dab in the middle of dinner hour, so we are totally cool with that!
