"Sounds of Summer" Finale
"The Best 'til Last"

That's right; you will not want to miss this one!  The final concert of the Estes Park Music Festival Summer Series will be a powerful event with two seldom heard pieces that will "knock your socks off!"

This concert will be performed at 7:30 PM on Monday, August 4 at the Stanley Hotel Concert Hall.

The guest conductor is Canadian Jean-Marie Zeitouni, music director of the Columbus Symphony and I Musici de Montreal.  Mr. Zeitouni is one of three guest conductors this summer who are auditioning the the position of Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival, filling the position of Michael Christie.

The violin soloist is Adele Anthony.  Since her triumph at the Denmark 1996 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition, Adele Anthony has enjoyed an acclaimed and expanding international career with a performance schedule that includes both solo appearances and chamber music performances around the world.  In recent seasons she has performed with the orchestras of Houston, San Diego, Seattle, Buffalo, Indianapolis and Milwaukee and abroad with orchestras in Budapest, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Paris and Leipzig.  She has also appeared at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. Her recent recitals include the complete works of Bach for solo violin.

There are two powerful pieces on this program.  The first is Carmen Suite by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin.  Shchedrin was born in 1932 in Moscow and was the chairman of the Composers' Union of the Russian Federation, succeeding Dmitri Shostakovich.  While his name is somewhat obscure in the west, his Carmen Suite is his best known composition here and was championed by Shostakovich. It is based on the opera by Georges Bizet.

What you will hear in this piece: You will recognize many of the most popular melodies from the opera. Shchedrin manipulates the original melodic material in wild and ingenious ways and also uses a large boisterous percussion section.  This work has flamboyance, fire and is outright fun to hear.  It will truly be a real tour de force.

The second piece is Serenade for Solo Violin, String Orchestra, Harp and Percussion by our favorite American composer, Leonard Bernstein.  Bernstein states, "There is no literal program for this serenade, despite the fact that it resulted from a rereading of Plato's charming dialogue, The Symposium.  The music, like the dialogue, is a series of related statements in praise of love, and generally follows the Platonic form through the succession of speakers at the banquet."  Each of the five speakers propounds his conception of love, thus this composition is in five movements.  This music goes through many moods and is a virtuosic piece for the solo violin.

This final concert, not to be missed, will truly be the finest of the season.

New this season will be the Pre-Concert Overtures. These informal dialogues and informative talks with the guest conductors are free to all concertgoers. They will take place in the Lodge adjacent to the Stanley Concert Hall beginning at 6:00 PM on the night of the concert. The guest conductor will be present between 6:30 PM until 6:45 PM. A cash bar will be available.
