Birthday Bash! Women Songwriters in the Round@Mississippi Pizza Pub
Women Songwriters in the Round Concert Series: July

In the spirit of fostering Portland's community of brilliant creators of song, Women Songwriters in the Round is a monthly concert series whose mission is to gather, promote, and share the "crème de la crème" of  Pacific Northwest female songwriters with an ever-expanding, supportive and appreciative listening audience.

Mel, Amber, and Katelyn have birthdays in July and want to celebrate together and share their songs with you at this fabulous event.

Artist lineup for July:
Mel Kubik
Amber Sweeney
Katelyn Convery

This format involves three or four songwriters seated in a semi- circle and taking turns singing their own songs, adding comments about the music  and occasionally accompanying each other instrumentally and on harmony vocals.

Mel Kubik:

Inspirationista, Muse-Wrangler, Singer of Stories, Writer of Songs, Ivory-Tickler, Sax Empress, Host of the Women Songwriter in the Round series at Shaker and Vine.

This ubiquitous Pacific NW singer-songwriter, pianist, saxophonist, producer and composer is a rare combination of sass and sensitivity. Stylistically, she easily walks through walls and establishes herself solidly in ANY genre she chooses.

Her melodies are set in any style that the lyric is calling for, be it sultry southern rock, early jazz, goth, country, ambient, or something you'd expect to hear in a French cafe. Her voice captures your imagination and permeates your inner world long into the night after you've stopped listening. This is a journey worth taking.

Though she has lent her innumerable talents and skills to countless others, and she remains a member of 80's pop band, Quarterflash, she is offering her newest SOLO venture under her OWN name, showcasing her artistry as songwriter, singer, pianist/multi-instrumentalist, storyteller, and consumate entertainer...occasionally collaborating with masterful guitarist and pedal steel player, Christopher Woitach.

She currently has 3 CDs in her personal discography, "Pigeon," her first and critically acclaimed solo CD (on Swallowhard Records), "Jungle Nights" with the Shanghai Woolies (on American Gavabun Records), and her current new release "Naked Songs" (for Screamin Tornado Music).

Mel has produced CDs for NW artists Nicole Campbell ("Little Voice") and Donna Jose ("On The Road With Buddah's Cat"), and co-composed "Kinji Suite" with native American artist, Arlie Neskahi for the Third Angle New Music Ensemble.
You hear her voice regularly on the air on commercials for "Goodwill" and "Subway," among others.

Her long and strong collaboration as composer and pianist with Marv Ross (of Quarterflash fame) landed her PAMTA awards for Best Original Score and Best Musical Theater Director for her work on the critically acclaimed musical,
"Ghosts of Celilo".

Amber Sweeney:

Amber Sweeney is an accomplished soul/rock singer, songwriter, and recording artist who recently signed with Seattle based record label, London Tone Music, to release a single as part of their 52x52: A Year In Your Ear project. Her single "Lone Sailor," produced by Geoff Ott, is due to release later this year.

In 2013, Amber released two E.P.s: The Starting Line (April 16) and Christmas Time (November 28). Both were released worldwide through CD Baby and are available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, Spotify, Pandora Radio and more.

Upon release of The Starting Line, Antimusic said, "In an age of auto-tuned so-called singers, a truly gifted singer like roots rocker Amber Sweeney is a breath of much needed fresh air."

Music from her album The Starting Line has been featured on Kink FM's Homegrown Spotlight, KUMZ FM's Local Roots radio, and KZME's Sunday Sessions.

Amber's voice, musical talent, and songwriting have also been featured in two CW television series: One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected (Flying Machine, Girl In The Moon, Quicksand, Maybe, Stars, Feel This - written by Jonathan Jackson of Enation) while one half of the duo known as Everly. Her voice has also been featured in Stephen King's film adaptation of Riding The Bullet, while bass player and back up singer for the rock band Enation. She can also be heard on another northwest band's album, The Alleged Album by One From Many (Tears We Cry Alone and Shape Of Your Heart).

Amber has been privileged to play at a variety of venues over the years, including: Bossanova Ballroom (Portland, OR), Genghis Cohen's (Los Angeles, CA), The Corn Palace (Mitchell, SD), The Whiskey A Go-Go (Los Angeles, CA), The Troubador (Los Angeles, CA) The Rutledge - Tin Pan South (Nashville, TN), Moulton Falls Winery (Yacolt, WA), to name a few. She is also scheduled to play Maryhill Winery (Goldendale, WA), and Clark County Fair (Ridgefield, WA) as part of her summer dates for 2014. She is known for being engaging and truly entertaining during her live performances.

Amber is also an advocate to end human trafficking, by supporting Not For Sale (www.notforsalecampaign.org) and Shared Hope International (www.sharedhope.org). She uses her song Leap (from The Starting Line E.P) to help open the dialogue about these issues and discuss how others can get involved.

Katelyn Convery:

Born in Portland, Oregon, Katelyn is a singer-songwriter who draws inspiration from the human experience and her many travels.

After purchasing her first guitar at the age of 16, Katelyn taught herself to play and started writing simple songs from day one.

Katelyn continued writing songs in high school and her first 2 years of college at University of Oregon, but real inspiration didn't hit until she traveled to Europe in 2006 to attend a study abroad program in Oviedo, Spain. "Leaving the country for the first time was like being reborn. It was like breaking free of my self-made cocoon and finally being able to see past the end of my nose. It began a period of processing my feelings and observations through song-writing. And it's never really left me since."

Since that first trip to Europe in 2006, Katelyn has lived in Oviedo, Spain, Seoul, South Korea, Barcelona, Spain, and most recently Cape Town, South Africa. She has traveled extensively in Asia and India specifically, as well as Europe. Her guitar has been a faithful friend throughout all of these travels and her songs are often little windows into the revelations she makes while being challenged by the universal human experience and by the solitude of being far from home.

Her music has been described by those close to her as "hopeful-melancholy" and is often calm and subdued with a relatable message and poetic lyrics. The effect of this type of music sang by her smooth and rich voice is immediately soothing and memorable.
