Amor & Psyche
Opera Feroce will present its critically acclaimed pasticcio opera Amor & Psyche, a fast-paced and whimsical tale of love, loss, reconciliation and jealous in-laws, on Monday and Tuesday, August 11 and 12, 2014, at 7:30 pm at the Blue Building, located at 222 East 46th Street in Manhattan.

Staged and set to the music of Handel, Dowland, Porpora and ten other masters of the 17th and 18th centuries, Amor & Psyche has been hailed as a 'masterful hodgepodge.' It is based on the Roman myth of the lovely mortal Psyche (Beth Anne Hatton, soprano), her on-again, off-again, on-again romance with Cupid, the god of love (Hayden DeWitt, mezzo-soprano), and their dealings with Venus, Psyche's father, Psyche's sister, Pan, and Jove (all played by Alan Dornak, countertenor).

Amor & Psyche mixes elements of vaudeville, opera seria, slapstick and tableau vivant into a subtle and witty parody of baroque opera in all its gender-crossing over-the-topness. Drawn from the baroque obsession with Antiquity, the story depicts the myth of Cupid, god of love, and his marriage to the mortal princess Psyche. The piece was constructed by overlaying the music of thirteen composers spanning two hundred years onto the tale. English Lute songs, secular cantatas, as well as Italian and German baroque opera and oratorio have all been plundered in the making of this work.

A & P premiered in August of 2010, shortly before the Metropolitan Opera announced plans for its pasticcio The Enchanted Island. As a side-note, The Enchanted Island returns to the big screen, this summer, in HD. You could spend four hours watching a canned performance, or for the same money (if you buy popcorn), come watch our fun-filled, well-edited (75 minutes), LIVE performance!
