Pilgrim Place and The Claremont Folk Music Center present The Progressive Music & Folk Festival at Pilgrim Place,Claremont, "Singing the Just Word: Celebrating a Century"  September 18 and 19.
A weekend  packed with many  concerts, folk arts and & crafts show, peace & justice displays, workshops, open studios, buffet picnic meals.
    Performers highlighting this event include the Claremont Folk Music Center's own Ellen Chase Harper singing and describing a people's history of protest, and  Roman Catholic Gospel Singer ValLimar Jansen, a highly regarded cantor and recording artist singing contemporary Christian and gospel-jazz styles.
    The major concerts feature veteran progressive singer-songwriters Jim Manley,  Jim and Jean Strathdee, and Bob Hurd. Each of them have a great catalog of recordings and published songs and hymns, their music is sung throughout  the English- and Spanish-speaking  faith communities of the world.      
    Additional featured performers include Patti Amelotte on dulcimer,  Cathy Clasper-Torch playing world music from many faiths on multiple instruments, Francisco Herrera with music up from the roots of low wage local workers.  
    Along with joyful entertainment the event will encourage faithful culture and music in of many traditions--Protestant, Catholic, and other faiths, as well as secular. Attendees will experience artistic power in progressive movements for peace and social justice. The messages of the Pope's new encyclical on care for the earth will be retold in great music.
    Event hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday.  There will also be arts and crafts booths and exhibits, including seminars on worship and the craft of the singer/songwriter for congregations, hammered dulcimers, audio/visual installation for churches, creative interplay and much more. A Peace & Justice Exhibit, featuring displays, photographs and other memorabilia, will tell the peace and justice story of many of the residents at Pilgrim Place.
    The Petterson Museum of Intercultural Art at Pilgrim Place will also expand its hours to be open during the music festival and will feature an exhibit of musical instruments from around the world jointly with the Claremont Folk Music Center,
    The Claremont School of Theology, Progressive Christians Uniting and local businesses are also helping to put on the event.
    On-Line reservations for the Progressive Music & Folk Festival are available for $35 through September 12 (AN EXTENDED BARGAIN DEDLINE!) and for $45 after that date. $12 registrations are available for students and low-wage workers. Optional meals are $13.

2:15 Lee and Cathy Clasper-Torch Concert " Prophetic Imagination East and West: Crazy Wisdom, Love, and Justice in the World's Sacred Literature" music and spoken words and also other workshops.
3:15 Popular Folk Sing-Along  with many participants
3:15 Panel discussion by several artists on the craft of singer/songwriters working with congregations.
4:15 Concert-Workshop- 'Protest music, the people's history" Ellen Chase Harper
4:15 Concert-Workshop by Kimball Coburn
5:15 Dinner with Cathy Clasper-Torch world music  on fiddle, cello, piano, and erhu from China.
7:00-9:00pm Outdoor Concert Presenting Jim and Jean Strathdee with ValLimar Jansen

This event is part of the Centennial of Pilgrim Place, where residents live in an intense, activist community after careers in religious or humanitarian work.
