smARTfilms: Comedy Series
Bainbridge Island Museum of Art's smART films series fosters community conversation through the merger of film, visual art and narrative. After each screening, audience members are invited to participate in an open exchange of ideas through moderated discussions which serve to anchor the film in the art and craft of our region and our time.

Individual admission: $10 adults / students free with pre-registration
Series admission: $60 adults / students free with pre-registration (Click the 2nd October 7th date in the drop down menu to purchase)

The BIMA Bistro stays open until 7pm in advance of each screening for food and small bites.

Join us Tuesdays at 7pm, October 7-November 18, 2014 for a sampler of Comedies in the BIMA Auditorium:

October 7: Series opener with a hand-picked collection of comedy short subjects ranging from the earliest days to the late 1920s when Vitaphone introduced sound on disk to preserve vaudeville routines and music.

October 14: Chaplin's CITY LIGHTS (1930), widely considered one of Chaplin's greatest films, also marks the transition from silent to sound.

October 21: IT'S A GIFT (1934), features W.C. Fields at his most curmudgeonly, re-creating some of his classic vaudeville and Follies sketches, along with a bizarre plot.

October 28: HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940).  A gender-switched version of the 1931 film, The FRONT PAGE. Fast-paced, filled with wonderful character actors and containing one of the all-time funniest five minutes in screen history.

November 4: BANANAS.  Woody Allen's humor is at his wild and bizarre best in this story of a "weird-gadget" tester who, after being jilted by his girlfriend (Louise Lasser), ends up as president of a tiny country where absurdity reigns.

November 11: THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP (1982).  The film captures the quirky spirit of the original John Irving novel. Robin Williams plays the title character, the son of unmarried, unorthodox feminist Jenny Fields (Glenn Close, in her film debut). Every effort made by Jenny to broaden Garp's outlook on life crams more fears and phobias into his psyche.

November 18: MOONRISE KINGDOM (2012).  Set in the summer of 1965, the film tells the story of two 12-year olds who fall in love (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward), make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. The cast includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand.
