RAC Presents El Mundo "Kingdoms of Castille"
El Mundo, under the direction of guitarist/lutenist Richard Savino, will present The Kingdoms of Castille: a Grammy-nominated program demonstrating the rich repertoire and close cultural connections between Spain, Latin America and Italy. Featured composers will include: José de Orejón y Aparicio (Peru) Santiago de Murcia (Spain/Mexico), Rafael Antonio Castellanos (Guatemala), José Quiroz (Guatemala) and Andrea Falconieri (Viceroyalty of Naples)

Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries the Spanish colonies of Central and South America became well-springs of cultural sophistication. Latin American cathedrals and courtly life demanded a varied and active musical scene. Often, the indigenous populations were drawn into the arts and participated in their production. The musical result was a style that even in sacred compositions bears the imprint of folk music. The use of guitars, and percussion, coupled with dance rhythms and the occasional use of native languages, demonstrates a close relationship between European and indigenous cultures.
