Step into a secret world Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve
"Field stations are places where we can read the book of life in the language in which it was written." James Kirchner, U.C. Berkeley
We are very excited to invite you to join a very a small group for a personalized tour of the hidden Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve on Saturday, September 6th. The preserve has been used for scientific studies for over 100 years and is off limits to the public. Located in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains near the Stanford University campus, it provides over 1,000 acres of natural laboratory for researchers from all over the world, as well as a refuge to native plants and animals.
We will start our tour at 9:30am at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve gate.
Unlike usual docent led tours, Dr. Philippe Cohen, Stanford's Director of the preserve, will provide an "insider's tour" of the preserve. Besides being introduced to the kind of invaluable and unique environmental research that is only possible at Field Stations, you will be introduced to important ongoing projects ranging widely from the Jasper Ridge Global Change Experiment to bat monitoring and ecology.
As a part of this informative tour we will walk together through the famous preserve's gorgeous hillsides, by Searsville Lake and finally enjoy a gourmet lunch outdoors under the oaks after we finish our tour at noon.
Because of the important research being done in the area, no children under 14 or any pets are allowed. Wear closed toe shoes, sun protection, a hat and bring a water bottle. Tick protection is also a good idea (long sleeves and long pants).
Location: As we have to carpool to the site we will meet at Woodside Town Hall parking lot, 2955 Woodside Rd. and leave at 9:15pm harp. Please, arrive for the carpool on time as the preserve's gate is locked and there will be no one at the gate.
All proceeds will benefit Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter and Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve.
