ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE (FILM at the Erie Art Museum)
August 27, 2014 Only Lovers Left Alive (2014)
In a summer of films and filmmakers exploring stories of our youth, it seemed appropriate to close with one of the year's highest-rated films featuring characters we equate with eternal life. But there is much more to these vampires (played to perfection by Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleson) than your typical blood suckers. Writer/director Jim Jarmusch's characters are eternal students, and as viewers we're reminded to never stop being students ourselves, no matter our age, because knowledge and discovery are the real rewards in this life.
Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier, an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister. Can these wise but fragile outsiders continue to survive as the modern world collapses around them? Rated R. 123 minutes. Written & Directed by: Jim Jarmusch. Starring: Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, and more.
