The Anastasio Project

Oakland, CA
Share this event:

The Anastasio Project is a multidisciplinary, mobile public performance that kickstarts an investigation of race relations, state brutality and border violence. Navarrete x Kajiyama Dance Theater (NAKA) will create The Anastasio Project in collaboration with EastSide Arts Alliance muralist Leslie Lopez and video artist Steven Sanchez. The work includes stories from the East Oakland community, a sound and video system on wheels, dance, theater, murals, and a topic that is relevant to all of us.

The work takes its name from the story of Hernandez-Rojas, a Mexican national who was detained at the U.S.-Mexico border in May 2010, and subsequently killed by a dozen Customs and Border Patrol agents.

The killing of Hernandez-Rojas is sadly only one of many tragic events where race, violence and the power of the state collide. In partnership with Eastside Arts Alliance, The Anastasio Project asks: How can we avoid repeating the tragedies of Hernandez-Rojas, Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Rodney King and thousands like them in cities around the country? How can we magnify the voices of our community against injustice?

NAKA leads an ensemble of performers including Kevin Akhidenor, Dajuan Carter-Woodard, Ricardo Ceja, Amara Tabor-Smith, Hector Torres and Michael Turner.  Original music for The Anastasio Project will be composed by award-winning sound artist David Molina.
