Blair Crimmins & The Hookers
Saturday, August 9 Doors: 7pm | Show: 8pm
"Dr. John and Preservation Hall have amalgamated a very astute protégé. While honoring his influences, Blair adds his own swinging southern panache with dashing youthful vehemence: rapid-fire lyrics and an audacious hair-tossing delivery. The band is solid, recalling fine players like Pete Fountain and Al Hirt." - Pete Knapp & Company
Crimmins brings The Hookers out to blast the room with Dixieland horns, rowdy ragtime piano and gypsy jazz guitar. Crooning and boozing the night away, he delivers everything you would expect from a man who claims to be possessed by the ghost of an old vaudevillian accordion player. Songs jump with a 1920s gaudiness, reminiscent of tawdry, dangerous jazz. While devious lyrics can mirror the sinister Charlestons they accompany, Crimmins also has a grab bag of unjaded torch songs at his disposal, spotlighting the loneliness of a life spent in the shadows.
