Wine & Cheese Tasting for New York State at Brooklyn Grange
It seems like everything is all about local these days, from the food we eat to the mayors we elect. And why not? After all, New York boasts the best of everything; so why are our wineries so often overlooked? Enter viticulturist (that means grower-of-grapes) Devin Shomaker, and third-generation winemaker Evan Miles, the brains behind Brooklyn's latest urban ag innovation, Rooftop Reds. New guys on the block, Devin and Evan will take a break from grafting vines onto the rows of their rooftop space to prove that New York wines can hold their own against the finest bottles from California and France, and to share their favorite selections of state-grown juice.
After a quick spin around Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm, we'll settle in for a tasting of cool climate wines, discussing how they differ from those of warmer regions. Instead of oakey Chards and fruit-bomb Zins, we'll focus on classic Rieslings and elegant Pinot Noirs, as well as up-and-coming varietals like Lemberger, Gewurztraminer, and even a few funky French Hybrids. We'll discover the best on offer from NY State's top three Approved Viticulture Areas (AVAs): Finger Lakes; Hudson Valley, and Long Island.
As they say, if it grows together, it goes together, so expect some nibbles of artisanal local cheeses and tips on pairing wine with cheese at home!
