Liz Carroll, with the Mari Black World Fiddle Ensemble
What a delight it will be to have Liz Carroll join us for her first appearance as part of the series. In my strong opinion, she is one of the top five trad fiddlers in the world.  Liz was born and raised in Chicago and grew up surrounded by an abundance of amazing traditional musicians who had flocked to the city during the years of mass emigration from Ireland during the 40s, 50s, and 60s.  Much of the fiddle music she heard was in the rich and flashy Sligo style. In addition to mastering this style and making it her own, she also developed a knack for writing new tunes which have since passed into the tradition, many being played now in sessions back in Ireland and indeed, all over the World.

Opening for Liz; one of the brightest young fiddlers around today whose release of her debut CD has created a lot of interest around the Boston area and beyond. Mari Black is equally at home in a wide variety of musical traditions.  In her playing, she creates shows that take listeners on a journey celebrating tradition and exploring new possibilities in the dance-based music of Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Argentina, the Americas, and more.  Mari is the reigning National U.S. Scottish Fiddle Champion, the 2012 Maritime Fiddle Champion, the 2011 Canadian Open Novelty Fiddle Champion, and first prize winner at the 2011 International American Protégé Competition

The Burren Backroom series is now well established as one of the most sought-after boutique series of trad presentation in the world.  It has already created already dozens of memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was founded by well-known traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.

Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music.  As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.

Tickets are $23 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members.  If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.

Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!
