FilmShop Labs 2014
FILMSHOP LABS
IFP Made in New York Media Center
Saturday, May 10th, 10am - 6pm

FilmShop Labs is a semiannual filmmaking symposium. It boasts a variety of workshops and Q&As to help filmmakers improve their craft. The program was curated based on the input of our members and designed to be as hands-on as possible. Many sessions will include suggested pre-work to ensure that you get the most out of your experience.

N.B.: Once you've purchased your event ticket, you will be able to sign up for four sessions (one per time slot). Please do so soon to secure your spot.

10 - 11:30

Session 1A:
The Brand of You

As an independent filmmaker, you do more than just make films. You cultivate relationships with audiences. You also build a brand for yourself and the kind of work you stand for. In this workshop, FilmShopper Heather Taylor, SVP of Mediaco, a global media branding company, will guide you through exercises to help you clarify your unique artistic qualities and delve into the increasingly sophisticated tools you can use to help ensure that your film is seen by exactly the people who would love to see it. Interested participants will be able to get their websites and other marketing materials live critiqued.

Session 1B:
Beyond Kickstarter: Grants and Partnerships

Looking for sources of funding, in the middle of a tough application, or simply interested in sharpening your grant writing skills? Kayla Rakowski, Development Officer for Foundation Relations at The Museum of Modern Art, will give an overview of grant resources, best practices, and creative tips to get your film proposal in the hands of the right partner.

11:45 - 1:15

Session 2A:
Case Study: Ectotherms

Ectotherms, Monica Peña's no-budget debut feature about a group of four teens on their way to a metal concert in Miami, has been compared to the early work of Harmony Korine. The film features a cast of non-actors and uses their real lives and the places they inhabit to shape the scriptless story, traversing Miami's island influences, wild Everglades swamps, and the urban spaces in between. Explore the joys and creative challenges of improvisational filmmaking in this in-depth case study.

Session 2B:
Case Study: Musicwood

When producer and FilmShopper Josh Granger and his wife, director Maxine Trump, set out to make their documentary feature Musicwood, they had no idea of the journey ahead. Join Josh for an exploration of the challenges they faced getting the film off the ground, the transformative lessons in the editing room, and their experiences taking their film out into the world. A New York Times Critics' Pick, Musicwood continues to play film festivals and theaters over a year after its debut.

LUNCH 1:15 - 2:45

2:45 - 4:15

Session 3A:
Interactive Storytelling

Intrigued by the possibilities of interactive storytelling? In this hands-on workshop led by the team behind the interactive music video for Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," you will work with Interlude's platform to begin creating interactive videos and explore ways to innovate within the form. No programming experience required, only a creative mind.

Session 3B:
Film Budgeting on a Budget

Having a realistic, detailed, and thought-out budget is key to attracting investors. It's also key to getting the most out of the money you have, and to getting your film on the screen. In this workshop, we will look at a wide range of actual film budgets: the no-budget short, the "calling-card" short, as well as the micro-budget, under-mil, and multimillion-dollar feature. Which corners do you cut, when do you not compromise, and how do you apply creative problem solving to your budget? Ela Thier, filmmaker and founder of the Independent Film School, has produced numerous award-winning films and has helped many filmmakers make sense of the numbers.

4:30 - 6

Session 4A:
Story Ideation

Where do we find the stories that resonate emotionally with audiences and with oneself as a writer? And what makes for a strong story? While there are no magic formulas, there are methods that can ignite the imagination. Join Christina Kallas, professor in the film programs of Columbia and Barnard, author of Creative Screenwriting: Understanding Emotional Structure and Inside the Writers' Room, and creator of the Writers Improv Method, for a hands-on workshop that will teach you ways to connect to your innate storyteller.

Session 4B:
Alternative Distribution

Alternative film distribution is more than just selling DVDs on your website. Today there are a number of ways for filmmakers to reach a paying audience online and even in theaters. The focus of this panel is to educate filmmakers on new business models available to circumvent traditional distribution and get your film seen by real, live people. Moderated by Don Downie, with Jeremy Boxer, Vimeo's Creative Director of Film & Video; Jay Hogan, Gathr Films' Director of Marketing and Outreach; and Amanda Trokan, Director of Content at Seed & Spark.
