BREEZE FROM THE EAST: Wisaal w/ Boheme Tribal and Friends | Foundry Hall
Wisaal is a Mediterranean fusion group based in Lansing, MI. The Arabic word "wisaal" means links, connections, or unities. This reflects an attempt to fuse elements of the Mediterrenean musical heritage with klezmer, Indian, and American influences. Formed in 2010, Wisaal has continuously developed and refined their music while performing throughout the United States. Their performances have captivated audiences at diverse venues, including the Lotus Festival (Bloomington, IN), Concert of Colors (Detroit, MI), and Global Rhythms (Miami University, OH). Their music has been described as "both engaging and complex, a lively, deeply spiritual tapestry of interwoven influences and melodies, times and cultures."

Wisaal's unique style of music draws influences from around the globe. Instrumental tunes from the Mediterranean, such as Zeina and Samai Kurd, are presented alongside original compositions and arrangements. "Bamo Ramo," written by former Wisaal member Navjot Sandhu, combines Indian rhythms with melodies from the Balkans. "Dark Eyes" features Klezmer-influenced clarinet in a fresh take on this old Gypsy tune. Other original compositions like "Aspen Grove," "Fusion Dance," and "Mediterranean Homesick Blues" combine Arabic melodic ideas with jazz and classical influences.

The band is made up of Igor Houwat (oud), Will Cicola (clarinet), Ben Fuhrman (mandolin), Tim Patterson (bass), Ty Forquer (percussion), and Mike List (percussion).

Boheme Tribal Belly Dance is an internationally recognized professional performance company, based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The troupe is directed by Sarah Schneider Koning and is currently comprised of six members, several of whom have decades of experience apiece. Another rare treat featured amongst their members is Erik Koning, one of the few professional male belly dancers in the U.S..

Boheme Tribal Belly Dance has performed throughout the U.S., at the Land of Nod Experience, CONvergence in Minneapolis, Tribal Revolution in Chicago, 219TimeMachine in Toledo, TribalPura in Bloomington, Indiana, Midwest Tribal Mafia in Chicago, and Vampire Ball in Flint. The troupe has been featured in numerable blogs and articles, including FUSE Magazine, Tribal Belly Dance Guide, GildedSerpent.com, Mahin's Daily Belly Dance Quickies, and Insects & Angels.
