Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" by Charlie Kanev
The Little Mermaid, adapted by  Susan I. Weinstein, features an original musical score by Rima Fand. The adaptation is faithful to Andersen's original concept and language, yet interprets the story with a contemporary sensibility. Shadow, Bunraku and rod puppets, depict characters, spirits of the air and the fluctuating forms of sea and sky. A horizon line between the worlds underwater and above, is constant yet changes with the story. The stage opens to that line as the Spirits of the Air begin the narration and disappears, as the story dips to the underwater castle of the Sea King, his mother and the six princesses.
Each princess has a different personality shown on the birthday they rise to the surface. The Little Mermaid's trip brings intense emotional involvement with a human. The love is between a Mermaid, part of the elemental forces of nature, and a human Prince living in a more linear temporal reality. What she will undergo to try to win him is about denying her essence, losing her voice. Though exquisitely beautiful with expressive eyes and a form beyond human grace, it is not enough without her voice. Winning him also means gaining an eternal soul. Yet Is that idea superior to joining the elemental sea? Andersen's interpretation assumes so, but would she reject her origins, when she unfailingly loves her family? The Sea Witch tries to deter her resolve to transform. She is not evil but an instrument of destiny, who evokes horror, because she traffics in mortality. This production  displays all the beauty and pageantry of Andersen's  epic tale.
