Mother Falcon with The Family Crest and Christopher Paul Stelling
Mother Falcon (Austin) supported by  The Family Crest (San Francisco)  and the Brooklyn troubadour, Christopher Paul Stelling. We are so lucky.

Mother Falcon began as a jam session among a group of high school cellists eager to break out of the classical repertoire that predominated their musical training. Since then, the band has evolved as an organic collective of classically trained young musicians determined to push their artistry into new musical territory.

Receiving as many accolades for their intimate chamber performances as for their electrifying club shows, Mother Falcon has crafted a signature soundscape by blending rock, jazz and hip hop rhythms with swirling horns and strings that alternately lead and support equally inventive vocal arrangements. In addition to violins, cellos, saxophones, and trumpet, the band includes piano, accordion, banjo, and bassoon.

The orchestral-rock ensemble won over audiences with a string of intense performances, resulting in NPR Music including the band in "Bob Boilen's 15 Essential Moments From SXSW 2013."

At the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Austin Music Awards, Mother Falcon won the "Best None of The Above" award, and performed at all three ceremonies. The Austin Critics Table also nominated the group as "Best New Ensemble" in 2011. Mother Falcon has worked with composers Jherek Bischoff, Graham Reynolds, and Peter Stopschinski, and has performed collaboratively with Amanda Palmer, Raul Midon, Tony Trischka, Ben Sollee, Kelli Scarr, Gary Lucas, and Christopher Cross, among others.

San Francisco's The Family Crest bring their own brand of symphonic rock to our stage. The brainchild of Liam McCormick, The Family Crest was started as a recording project in 2009 with co-founder John Seeterlin (bass). "We were in another band and had become disillusioned," explains McCormick. "John and I were actually planning on leaving music at that point because we wanted something that in ten years we could be proud of."

Instead of leaving music, they set out to reinvent how it could be created, starting The Family Crest. "We always liked making music with people  getting a bunch of people together and singing. So we put ads everywhere," says McCormick. "We posted on Craigslist and emailed old friends from school." The outcome was greater than the original duo imagined, with 80 people credited on the first recording the band produced. From that a band emerged, at the urging of the guest musicians, who wanted to hear the songs performed live. "We've worked with a lot of conservatory students as well as people who just sing in the shower," McCormick adds. "It became a lot about giving these people a chance to express themselves without being locked into a commitment."

Now a seven-piece core band, boasting over 400 "Extended Family" members, The Family Crest released Beneath the Brine in February 2014 on Tender Loving Empire. Just with its previous recordings, the San Francisco band set out to capture a plethora of instruments  including bassoon, vibraphone and French horn  in unique places, such as living rooms, churches and cafes across the West Coast.

Christopher Paul Stelling (Brooklyn) blew everyone away last fall opening for Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons. Armed with a road-worn acoustic guitar, his voice and two albums ("False Cities," "Songs of Praise and Scorn") worth of incredible songs, he is a force to be reckoned with. We are thrilled to have him back for one of the most exciting musical nights we will have this year.
