"I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives"
Abraham Lincoln __________________________________________________________
We Benicians are a proud people; proud of our homes, our gardens, our history, and most of all of Benicia herself. Therefore, it is with great pleasure and a healthy smattering of pride that we present some of the best among us
Two Benicia landmarks will be among the properties to open their doors to the public as part of Benicia Historical Society's annual home and garden tour.
The Fish-Riddell mansion on West K Street and the Frisbie-Walsh house on East L Street will be among several homes and gardens featured on the tour. Tour hours will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 10, the day before Mother's Day. Tour participants can round out their visit to Benicia at the monthly Art Walk, scheduled that day from 3 to 7 p.m.
The Fish-Riddell mansion (245 West K Street) is an impressive Queen Anne Victorian that has been meticulously restored. The home features a turret and has a mahogany staircase and mantels, stained-glass windows and decorative plaster brackets. It is the most elaborate of the 19th-century homes that still stand in Benicia.
The Frisbie-Walsh house (235 East L Street) was recently restored to a single-family home after several years as a bed-and-breakfast. Elements of the home were pre-fabricated on the East Coast and shipped around Cape Horn to Benicia. Assembly and final construction were completed in 1850, and the home is considered to be the earliest Gothic Revival structure on the West Coast.
Also featured on the tour will be the Leary house at 140 E. G Street. This home has been occupied by members of the Clyne family since the turn of the 20th century. It is an example of Queen Victorian architecture with strong Colonial Revival details. This house also has been restored recently.
Other homes and gardens also will be included in the tour. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the tour. Tickets will be available online at www.beniciahistoricalsociety.org starting April 10, and at Camellia Tea Room, Benicia Main Street, and Bookshop Benicia in downtown Benicia, and Steve's Hallmark at the Southampton shopping center. Proceeds will benefit Benicia Historical Society programs, including restoration of the Von Pfister General Store.
Tour participants are asked to wear soft-soled shoes. Children are not allowed on the tour, and backpacks, baby carriers and strollers are not permitted in the homes. Please note the homes and gardens are not wheelchair accessible.
