LHAAFF: De Wonderboom. kunst van Capricorne (Film Shorts Followed By Feature Film)
Dust, USA, 2013, 9 min

Adapted from a National magazine Award-winning poem, Dust braids two memories from a poet's writer's youth. In one memory, the young man remembers a last moment with a lover. In the other memory the young man recalls his final hours with his dying grandfather. Ultimately, this contemplative examination of the nature of grief becomes a poetic meditation of 'water, skin and dust. Some mature themes and language.

Meeting Gary, USA, 2013, 13 min (US Premiere)

Meeting Gary is a film about domestic child neglect. The story is set up in the low income, 'ghetto' neighborhood. A boy's dream of becoming a professional dancer is being ignored by his own parents because they are too busy dealing with their own life struggles. He keeps reaching out for love and understanding, but keeps getting rejected. Is anybody out there who is paying attention to this boy's most basic need for love and support? Will he carry on going and follow his dream? Some mature themes and language.

Looking For Mr. Stieglitz, USA, 2013, 13 min (US Premiere)

Modern art meets the Harlem renaissance at 291 Fifth Avenue where Georgia O'Keeffe, who is looking for Mr. Stieglitz, encounters the unexpected. Set in 1916 in New York City, O'Keeffe meets Hodge Kirnon, originally from the West Indies and now weary from many years of navigating the 'American Dream.' Georgia finds much in common with this stranger as he shares his frustration with intolerance and as she deals with her own insecurities about being an artist and a woman in a man's world. Some mature themes and language.

The Waves, USA, 2013, 8 min (World Premiere)

A woman meets a stranger who entices her for swim in the deep, dark, seductive waves.

De Wonderboom. kunst van Capricorne, Netherlands, 2013, 40 min (US Premiere)

The documentary is about the Curaçaoan artist José Maria Capricorne, an Afro Caribbean descendant of the African diaspora. He is considered the godfather of Curacao art. Capricorne is the co-founder of the Curacao Art Academy (founded in 1969). In the documentary we see him, relatives and collectors looking back at Capricorne's career. Caribbean identity plays a big part in his work.
Did he succeed in helping his people emancipate through art, as was his ideal? Some mature themes and language.

Also, images of Brazil show the artistic and social impact of Rio de Janeiro on Capricorne's work. Being 80 years old, the artist still works in his atelier in Nijmegen (The Netherlands). Finally, younger artists in Curaçao give their vision on the role of art in Curaçaoan society today.
