Fake Radio Presents: "The Phantom of the Opera" with special guest... George Wendt!!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014 - Hollywood, California

"Slickly professional in every particular..."
The LA Times

"A palpable sense of infectious goofiness..."
The LA Weekly

Join Fake Radio  LA's Premier Old-Time-Radio Comedy Troupe  for a special, live performance at the famous Arclight Hollywood! For one night only, we'll re-create Lux Radio Theatre's 1943 broadcast of "The Phantom of the Opera". Joining us as our special guest star is George Wendt who portrayed the iconic barfly "Norm!" on the hit sitcom "Cheers". Bernadette Wendt, Geroge's wife and master improvisor will also be joining us as well. As usual, Fake Radio will re-enact this hit show the old-fashioned way: dressed in period clothing, and standing with scripts in hand in front of old microphones. Sound and music effects will make you feel like you're watching a live radio recording from the 1940's. We'll even re-create the old commercials!

Lux Radio Theatre's "The Phantom of the Opera"
Erique Claudin has been a violinist at the Paris Opera House for twenty years. After being fired from the opera due to his failing hands, he is left poor, having spent all of his money by anonymously funding the music lessons of Christine Dubois, a young soprano. In a desperate attempt to gain money, Claudin tries to sell a concerto but is rebuffed. When he hears his concerto being played and claimed by others, he turns to violence and darkness, turning from a life of music into a life of fear and manipulation. Phantom of the Opera was adapted into an audio presentation for the Lux Radio Theater the same year as the movie: 1943. Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster and Edgar Barrier reprised their roles, but instead of Claude Rains, Basil Rathbone played Erique Claudin. This presentation was produced and hosted by Cecil B. DeMille.

For over a decade, "Fake Radio" has been delighting audiences and critics alike with their unique re-creations of classic radio shows from 1938 - 1958, "The Golden Age" of the art form. Their shows transport audiences back in time to a live taping of an old-time-radio show. The troupe performs in the same fashion popularized during the Golden Age: cast members dressed in period clothing stand before old microphones, scripts in hand, re-creating classic stories while all of the sound effects are perfectly synchronized. The troupe's well-known hallmark is expertly blending the original broadcast scripts  including the absurd commercials!  with unexpected improvisation.

Over time, the troupe has garnered the respect and participation of a host of well-known actors and comedians. Previous Fake Radio guest stars include:

Emmy Award winners John Larroquette & Marcia Wallace; Comedy legends Fred Willard, The Kids in the Hall, & Phil Proctor from The Firesign Theatre; noted alternative comedians Tom Kenny, Maria Bamford & Rick Overton; well-established TV actors such as Jeff Garlin, John Lynch, Debra Skelton & Dean Cain; and even one of the original cast-members from Saturday Night Live: Larraine Newman.
