Sheriff Kralik (Ret.) - An Evening at the Historical Society of Rockland County
Evening Lecture:  Sheriff James Kralik (Ret.)
The HSRC invites you to an evening with Sheriff James Kralik (Ret.)

Thursday, May 1, 2014; 7:15 sharp

Sheriff Kralik will present a video and lead a discussion about the Civil War.

Jim Kralik has been a lifelong history enthusiast.  With a keen interest in Civil War History, he is a founding member of the Rockland County Civil War Round Table and a licensed battlefield guide at Gettysburg.

One of his most important projects with the Civil War Round Table was to secure $250,000 in NY State grant funds to clean and restore 111 NY monuments located in Gettysburg, PA.  (There are 111 monuments and markers to New York at Gettysburg, the most to any state except Pennsylvania).   Securing the funds was a lengthy, but worthwhile project for James Kralik who hailed the efforts of Senator Joseph Holland and Round Table President Paul Martin as among those who were instrumental in helping Kralik to make the grant a reality.   Kralik noted, "If you remember the veterans of the Civil War through the proper upkeep and care of memorials, then you're saying you're going to remember the veterans of every war to come."

Sheriff Kralik continued his civil war history interest when he became involved in the effort to preserve and restore a Civil War Flag that had belonged to the Edward Pye Post of Haverstraw, NY.   This flag, a Grand Army of the Republic Flag, was discovered by Lance Ingmire, regiment historian of 95th New York.

Kralik has worked tirelessly with other volunteers to raise the funds to bring the Grand Army of the Republic Flag back from ruin.  Kralik believed that having the flag restored was important to perpetuate the memory of the Civil War veterans. "When we begin to forget one set of veterans, we begin to forget them all," he said. "By remembering the Civil War veterans, we remember them all."

After a 50 year career in Law Enforcement, Jim Kralik has retired and he spends his time running his businesses in Gettysburg, PA where he operates camp grounds, a riding stable and tours of the Civil War Battlefield on 49 acres in the historic Pennsylvania community.
