Atlanta Schola Cantorum - The Musical Parody
"Before and after" compositions of Renaissance masters.
A popular technique during the Renaissance and continuing into the present, parody refers to recasting music already in existence to another purpose. Central to the May program are movements from Claudio Monteverdi's Missa 'in illo tempore,' which parodies Nicolas Gombert's motet In illo tempore loquante Jesu. Also included on the program are Michael Pretorius' Christ lag in Todesbanden and Johann Walther's Christ ist erstanden (both derived from the ancient Easter plainchant Victimae Paschali laudes); the Agnus Dei movement from Victoria's Missa 'O quam gloriosum'; the eponymous motet, Andrea Gabrieli's Angelus ad pastores ait (parodied by Heinrich Schütz in his Der Engel sprach); and Jehan L'Heritier's Nigra sum sed formosa, upon which Palestrina also based a mass setting.
