Getting Started in Music and Dance: An Open House for Young Children and Their Families
Do you have a young child who loves music and dance, but you're not sure how to help them get started? Join us for an afternoon session of demonstrations, presentations and hand-on activities designed to answer your questions and give you the information you need to get your child ready to begin learning how to sing, dance, or play an instrument.
1:00 to 2:30 pm Music Program (Instrumental and Vocal)
Children love music and movement; it's natural almost instinctual for them to sing, clap, make rhythms, and move. But how early should they get started in more formal classes and lessons? What instrument should they play? How do you know if they are ready? How long of a lesson should they take and often should they practice? To help answer these questions, teaching artists, from Hope Academy of Music and the Arts, will give presentations on piano, strings (violin, viola, cello), flute, guitar, drums/percussion and voice. Children will be able to get up close to listen to and touch the instruments. Families will be invited to observe a Suzuki violin class in action and learn more about our new Suzuki piano program. Scholarship applications (for Fall 2014) will be accepted and appointments for interviews will be scheduled.
2:30 to 3:30 pm Dance Program (PBT @ Hope Academy)
An early introduction to dance can foster a lifelong interest in, if not a love for, movement, music, rhythm and dance. However, it's important that the introduction be fun and stimulating; and that it engage the child's body, mind and imagination.
There are many different methods and approaches to dance training for young children. To find out about Hope Academy's, join us to observe an "open class" for 6- to 8-year-old dancers; and meet Alyssa Herzog Melby, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's Director of Education and Community Engagement.
