Syrian Classical Music Composer Zaid Jabri at Alwan with Kinan Azmeh, Amir ElSaffar and Accompanying String Quartet
Alwan for the Arts is happy to announce an evening of original and unique contemporary classical music by Syrian composer and violinist Zaid Jabri in collaboration with Amir ElSaffar and Kinan Azmeh and an accompanying String Trio. The evening is sure to be an innovative, inimitable and anomalous performance that will entice and challenge the audience's impressions of new Middle Eastern music.

About the Performers
Zaid Jabri is a Syrian composer of electro-acoustic music, currently living and working in Poland. Heralded as a creator of fascinating, complex and brilliantly executed unique compositions, Jabri's works have been performed by the Armenian National Symphony Orchestra, the Syrian National Symphony Orchastra, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra among numerous others. In 2008 Zaid Jabri was invited by the Istanbul Bilgi University Music Department as Artist/Composer during The Days of Polish Music and in 2011 he became a member of ZKP (The Polish Composers Union). Zaid Jabri obtained his M.A. degree with honors from the Music Academy of Cracow in Poland where he studied composition with Zbigniew Bujarski and is currently working on his PhD at the same academy under the supervision of Professor Krzysztof Penderecki.

Amir ElSaffar is an Iraqi-American trumpeter, composer, singer, and santour player and expert on the Iraqi maqam, who has garnered an international reputation for his original and innovative work. ElSaffar, winner of 2013 Doris Duke Award, uses the microtones found in maqam music to create a unique approach to harmony and melody, and cross-cultural music making. A skilled jazz trumpeter with a classical background, he has created new techniques to play microtones and ornaments that are idiomatic to Arabic music but are not typically heard on the trumpet. ElSaffar has received grants to compose music from Chamber Music America, the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the Jerome Foundation, Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT), and the Painted Bride Arts Center in Philadelphia. He has been Alwan's music curator since 2008.

Kinan Azmeh is a Syrian born musician whose unique sound has afforded him global recognition as a virtuoso clarinettist and composer. Azmeh has appeared worldwide as a soloist, composer and improviser having collaborated with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the West-eastern Divan Orchestra, the Kiev Camerata, the Corasara Orchestra and the Syrian Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Azmeh has a multitude of compositions including his discography of three albums with his ensemble HEWAR, several soundtracks for film and dance, and a duo album with pianist Dinuk Wijeratne. He serves as artistic director of the Damascus Festival Chamber Music Ensemble and is on the advisory board of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra.
