AZAR LAWRENCE QUARTET AT BLUE
This will be a very special show folks!
Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw...Azar Lawrence has played with all of these Jazz Legends and he's coming to Blue! Azar's live performance, as described by the L.A. Times, is "a searing ride, whipping through fast-fingered arpeggiated runs, soaring into the tenor saxophone's high harmonics." Mr. Lawrence played with Miles Davis on his landmark album Dark Magus, with Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner for an extended stint, and on Woody Shaw's The Moontrane. Like John Coltrane, he plays tenor saxophone, bringing Trane's big sound, and an earthy, ethereal imagination. Azar has recorded some well-received albums, including a Coltrane tribute, and is anticipating the release of his new album this year, 'The Seeker' - Live at The Jazz Standard. He's bringing a dynamic quartet to the Blue stage: the Tynereque pianist Benito Gonzalez, who's toured with jazz master, Kenny Garrett, as well as Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Jackie McLean, Bobby Hutcherson, and many others. Essiet Okon Essiet, an unflappable bassist, former member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, until the famed drummer's passing. He has an impressive freelance career playing with notables such as, Benny Golson, Bobby Hutcherson, Kenny Burrell, Azar Lawrence, Billy Higgins, Billy Hart, Art Farmer, Abby Lincoln, and Dee Dee Bridgewater to highlight only a partial list. On drums, Brandon Lewis, who has played with many great artists such as Carla Cook, Kenny Garrett, Azar Lawrence, Harry Whitaker, Myron Walden, and many more. Brandon also played as part of orchestras for hit Broadway shows, The Color Purple and Memphis. He's recently been touring internationally as part of the jazz trio "Spiritrio" along with pianist Anthony Wonsey, and bassist Dmitry Kolesnik. This group released an album in 2013 entitled Episode 1. Having these formidable performers coming to Blue, Portland's most intimate live music venue will be breathtaking and memorable. This is rare musical experience no one should miss.
