A Room with a View is adapted from E. M. Forster's classic 1908 novel (included in the Modern Library List of the 100 greatest books of the 20th Century). It tells the story of a sheltered young Englishwoman, Lucy Honeychurch, and her awakening to love, art, desire, and human nature during a visit to Florence, Italy.
Adult Language: There is very little adult language and none of it is in English. A young Italian girls cries, "Bastardo!" when her boyfriend pays too much attention to Lucy and a vendor and a thief curse at one another in Italian (sample line: "Vacagore!", meaning "Piss off!").
Drugs/Alcohol: Albert, an English gardener, is seen drunk on the job and drinking from a flask; a maid, Minnie, takes the flask from him and drains it.
Violence/Scariness: A minor character is killed onstage by a thief with a knife.
Sexual References: A young Italian couple are seen several times, playing various roles (maid and bellboy, carriage driver and girlfriend) and always flirting, embracing, kissing, becoming more and more amorous; the English characters are variously shocked, fascinated, or charmed. An English clergyman, the Reverend Mr. Beeber, has several lines that are unintentional double entendres (sample line: "We are passing the villa of Lady Amberley-Sherman. She possesses the most exquisite Etruscan bust.")
