ALAS Dia Del Niño at Notre Dame de Namur Univeristy
Come and celebrate Dia del Niño at the Notre Dame de Namur Univeristy Theatre with youth performances directed by Zenon Barron of Ballet Folklorico Tonanztin of Half Moon Bay and San Francisco's Mission Cultural Center. Special performance by youth Mariachi Media Luna Directed by Omar Naranjo will bring a festive flair of music to the stage. Part of the proceeds will support the Sister Dorothy Fund, a NDNU scholarship fund for assistance to students wtih particular barriers to college enrollments and success.
Director, Zenon Barron was born and raised in Guanajuato, Mexico where he began his training and love of dance at age 12. He is a professional dancer trained in modern dance, classical ballet and Mexican folk dance. He is a researcher of Latin American folklore, costume and scenogoraphy who uses his broad training and experience to bridge gaps between various art forms, styles and cultures. Maestro Zenon founded San Francisco's premiere Mexican Dance group Los Ensambles Ballet Folklorico de San Francisco to promote Mexican dance with quality and authenticity. He also is Director of Ballet Folklorico Tonanatzin in Half Moon Bay.
Director Omar Naranjo of Mariachi Media Luna, from Santa Cruz has inspired a community of children from Half Moon Bay to learn the various instruments of Mariachi. Born In Mexico and raised in Santa Cruz, Omar began well known Mariachi Juvenil Santa Cruz. His love for Mariachi continues to grow each week with the children and families of Mariachi Media Luna.
The children of Tonantzin and Mariachi Media Luna are part of the program ALAS, Ayudando Latinos A Soñar, Latinos to Dream. This program works with children to promote the cultural arts in a rural community and expand their opportunities for learning dance and music. Children of Tonantzin, Mariachi Media Luna and Ensambles Dance Academy have been preparing for this special afternoon of performance to celebrate and honor the Mexican tradition of Dia del Niño. You will be amazed at the special talent of these children and the creative work of Zenon Barron to bring their dance alive on stage.
This special showcase is a collaborative effort with AlAS, Ensambles and Notre Dame de Namur to support student success.
