Laura Kastner, Ph.D. - Parenting Essentials: Promoting your child's happiness and success
The Parents Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Bellevue College Parent Education Program presents its annual Spring Lecture on April 24, 2014. Don't miss this event tailored to parents of children age infant to seven.
Parents can be overwhelmed with all the information available about child development and parenting. While there have been thousands of academic studies conducted at this point, parenting books don't always reflect evidence based research. Media news can go both ways, giving excellent coverage of scholarly work or the opposite. Parents can be left a bit confused about what advice about child development is a fad and what's worth serious consideration. Furthermore, with the importance of culture and diversity among families, how do you know whether generic advice is a good fit for your family anyway?
In this presentation, Dr. Kastner will briefly review the "best practices" in parenting that have emerged over the last fifty years of research. You will learn about how these parenting practices build the 7 parenting essentials which predict future positive outcomes in child-rearing, including school achievement, lower substance use, stable relationships, job success, and optimal psychological health.
Come join us for a stimulating discussion about good old wisdom, new research and our most valued investment, experience, and job our children.
Dr. Kastner is a clinical professor in the departments of Psychology and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She is the co-author of four books on child development, including Getting to Calm: Cool-headed Strategies for raising tweens and teen and The Wise-Minded Parent: 7 Essentials for Raising Successful Tweens and Teens. More information about Dr. Kastner can be found at www.laurakastnerphd.com.
Tickets sales support the Parent Education Scholarship Fund, which provides temporary financial assistance for families enrolled in early learning classes offered through the Bellevue College Parent Education Program.
