Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teaches participants how to use mindfulness to interrupt habitual, automatic reactions to stress, allowing them to respond to what life presents in more creative, beneficial ways. The class teaches mindfulness through body awareness exercises, sitting and walking meditation, and gentle hatha yoga.
MBSR was developed in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Participants over the past 30 years report many benefits from taking the course:
*Lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms *An increased ability to relax *Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away *Greater energy and enthusiasm for life *Improved self-esteem *An ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations.
Featured on Bill Moyers' PBS documentary, "Healing and the Mind," and in the February 3, 2014 issue of "TIME Magazine," MBSR is taught at major medical centers, universities, and corporations throughout the world. Over 300 published research studies consistently demonstrate MBSR's effectiveness.
Michelle Taufmann is a licensed social worker who has taught mindfulness in corporate and community settings, in both group and one-one-one formats. She has received advanced training in MBSR from the course founder, Dr. Kabat-Zinn. Michelle uses skills she developed as a psychotherapist and focus group facilitator to skillfully lead dialogue among students, and to explain concepts in ways that support understanding of the course material. During the past 15 years Michelle has maintained a personal meditation practice and has attended multiple extended meditation retreats where she received advanced instruction in meditation. She has deep personal experience applying mindfulness and meditation to effectively navigate multiple life transitions.
