Brunch at City O' City 10am-2pm with DJ JD! Choice between three different delicious brunch entrees and BOTTOMLESS MIMOSAS!!! PLUS- Cosmic Wise-Asses from Mile High Sci-Fi will screen DreamScape 2pm-4pm milehighscifi.com "Most cult and sci-fi film enthusiasts have mimicked the comically self-deprecating antics of Comedy Central's decade-long running series, Mystery Science Theater 3000, in the living rooms of like-minded friends. Few, however, can boast that they've experienced such an event live and in the flesh with hundreds of other people. Counted among them are now the lucky film geeks and cinema lovers of the midwest's aptly named, Mile High City!
Enter "Mile High Sci-Fi" - a raucous live event held every month at the Denver Film Center. Co-founded by Matt Vogl and Harrison Rains - stand-up comedians and regulars at Denver's own Comedy Works - "Mile High Sci-Fi" fuses genre film and comedy into a hilariously irresistible and refreshingly interactive mixture. Devouring this hybrid concoction are often sell-out crowds of cult, horror, sci-fi and general genre movie enthusiasts, all anxious to relive - and reinvigorate - guilty film pleasures through the live comedy antics of the MHSF team (with whom this Examiner is planning a more in-depth interview in the near future).
MHSF's targets range from obscenely over-funded and/or misguided Hollywood blockbusters (eg., last June's sold out showing of Independence Day, or July's screening of early Arnold Schwarzenegger opus, Raw Deal) to basement-budget horror schlockers and sci-fi cult film oddities like May's screening of The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai: Across the Eight Dimension. The only criterion that seems to apply to MHSF's wide-ranging targets consists of an almost eerie ability to draw credulous smirks and dumbfounded stares from their arguably imprisoned viewers. Indeed, while many of their films induce suffering within the conventional theater or living room setting, Vogle's crew aim to alleviate such discomfort with a steady supply of home-made puns, skewering one-liners and enough random tangents to fill an entire evening of Adult Swim programming. Not to mention the DFC's fully loaded bar and drink specials, of which the often rowdily interactive crowds have no issue in partaking while sharing cult movie memories with sympathetic film lovers."
