Old School Kung Fu Fest 2014

Rising from the ashes of Subway Cinema's original underground Old School Kung Fu Fests of the early 2000s, the Old School Kung Fu Fest is back for its 2nd annual installment as a 3-day celebration of classic Asian martial arts and action films at the Anthology Film Archives.

This year, with the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York, we're celebrating the life and work of Lau Kar-leung, the man who was the soul of kung fu cinema! A genius of mayhem, this action auteur is as philosophical as Kubrick and as kinetic as Jackie Chan, a Godzilla-sized talent who towers over the martial arts movie landscape. If ever a director was ripe for re-discovery, re-evaluation, and resurrection it's Lau Kar-leung and his classy, epic, thoughtful, ass-kicking martial arts movies.

The first director to treat kung fu realistically, pitting style against style (Northern Fist vs. Southern Leg! Monkey Boxing vs. Drunken Boxing!), he made movies where martial arts were a philosophy, where training elevated the soul, virtue was more important than survival, and invincible enemies were stabbed in the eardrums. Lau Kar-leung passed away last year at 78 years old, so we're unleashing five of his greatest movies (including Lau's masterpiece DIRTY HO, and the legendary 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN, both on 35mm!) plus his show-stopping appearance in Sammo Hung's rarely-screened classic, PEDICAB DRIVER, as well as his and his brother's unstoppable action choreography in Jimmy Wang's MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE, to pay tribute to the first true master of the martial arts cinema.

If all of that kung fu movie goodness wasn't enough, we've also unearthed a rare 16mm print of the Korean martial arts classic, CANOTON VIPER, featuring "King of Kicks" and taekwondo Grandmaster Hwang Jang-Lee (DRUNKEN MASTER, SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW), in one of his career-defining roles.

Our tribute to Lau Kar-leung will also include a special New York premiere of an exhibition about his life and career, entitled My Way, Lau Kar-leung, which was previously shown in Hong Kong and Chicago.

Still not enough?

We have another treat! In collaboration with Jerry Ma of Epic Proportions (well known to New York Asian Film Festival audiences as the designer of our official festival t-shirts since 2009), we've assembled a team of top local comic book artists and illustrators to create original artwork inspired by the films in this year's lineup. Participating artists include Larry Hama (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero), Bernard Chang (Green Lantern Corps), Ken Knudtsen (My Monkey's Name is Jennifer), SooJ Lee & Jef Castro (Point-and-Question), Glenn Urieta (Secret Identities & Shattered, The Asian-American Superhero Graphic Novels), John Jennings (The Hole: Consumer Culture, Black Comix: African American Independent Comics), and Jerry Ma (Secret Identities & Shattered, The Asian-American Superhero Graphic Novels). The artwork will be on display at the Anthology Film Archives for the duration of the Old School Kung Fu Fest.

We're deeply grateful for the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York.

Additional support by The Korea Society, Epic Proportions, Dragon Dynasty, Well Go USA, and Yum Cha Studios.

Screening materials provided by the American Genre Film Archive, Celestial Pictures, the Korean Film Archive, Pathfinder Pictures, and Warner Brothers.

Special thanks to Larry Hama, Bernard Chang, Ken Knudtsen, SooJ Lee & Jef Castro, Glenn Urieta, John Jennings, and Jerry Ma.
