Tricks
Written as a one-act play for the Riant Theatre in New York City in the winter of 2004, Tricks was inspired by an article in the San Diego Gay and Lesbian Times about a 17 year old who was kicked out of his house in Georgia for coming out. He traveled across the country, hitch-hiking with truckers, and ended up turning tricks in San Diego, where he contracted HIV.
Tricks shares the relationship between two human beings and the unexpected impact they have on each other's lives. As their own lives change to become more authentic and honest, what will be the outcome of those changes on each other? Tricks explores the lives of both Hank, a married man who truly wants to be loved by another man, and Daryl, a younger man rejected by his family, who desperately needs love. At the beginning of the play, Hank finally gets up the nerve to approach a handsome male hustler in the park; however, the young hustler, Daryl, refuses to service this man because he can only provide sex. What happens when they reunite a year later when both their lives have changed?
