BUFFALO SOLDIERS:THE LEGACY 2014
The play, Buffalo Soldiers: The Legacy, is a community based production which highlights the historical contributions of the African American soldiers of the late 1800's, the Buffalo Soldiers.
The play chronicles one military campaign in the southwestern territories of Arizona and New Mexico, during the war between the indigenous people and the United States Cavalry, more commonly referred to as the "Indian Wars."
The purpose of this production is to educate as well as entertain students and community people about the virtually unknown and often overlooked role that these heroic men and women played in the development of this country.
The story takes place during the post-slavery period, shortly after the 1863 emancipation of the African AMerican slaves. The Buffalo Solsiers represent a variety of human conditions ranging from former slaves and former civil war veterans, to northern free black businessmen. These men and women share a common human pursuit, in spite of certain philosophical aand moral objections.
Ultimately, there is a shifting of personal cultural pardigms as the soldiers encounter a proud people, the Apaches. This is a story of the cultural as well as the personal actualizations of two different, yet very similar groups of people.
The production is used to create a historical interest for students to develop an interest in learniong more about this country's history. There are scenes which are full of action, compassion, music, comedy and  even personal introspection designed to have the audience reflect on their own legacy.
