Dance Party/Fundraiser/Send-off for Ellie Shapiro
Dance to the hip-swaying Jewish grooves of world-class bands. The night features members of the Ark Ensemble, a super group commissioned by JMF that has toured internationally and produced the CD "Might Be." The band will feature Bay Area Arkers Stuart Brotman (Veretski Pass, Brave Old World) on bass, Jewlia Eisenberg (Charming Hostess) on vocals, Glenn Hartman (New Orleans Klezmer All Stars) on accordion, Jessica Ivry (Real Vocal String Quartet) on cello and John Schott (John Zorn, Tom Waits) on guitar, with special guests. And just announced: the world-renowned Bay Area klezmer trio Veretski Pass will play. The Dance Party is also a fundraiser for JMF as it enters its 29th season. Great ideas are in progress for next year. As always, it will be a unique program including top musicians showcasing original music not often heard in the Bay Area. JMF, the nation's senior festival of Jewish music, is self-supporting through grants, ticket sales and individual gifts. Donations assure that JMF continues to present the finest in Jewish music to Bay Area audiences and nurture creative projects such as the Ark and Ger Mandolin Ensembles. JMF will be in great hands with Andy Muchin, currently the associate director. A recent transplant from Wisconsin, Andy has two decades of experience as a journalist focusing on Jewish culture, with a focus on music. His weekly radio program Sounds Jewish can be streamed from the Mississippi NPR affiliate, MPB Music Radio. Ellie leaves July 20 to conduct research focusing on the Jewish music in contemporary Poland. You're invited to send her off in style at this midsummer fete while assuring that JMF remains on solid footing. For more information, call (510) 848-0237 x118.
