Russell Ferrara, Guitar in the Classic Style

Classical Guitarist Russell Ferrara performs and explains his use of MIDI technology and improvisation to expand the reach of the nylon string guitar. This event will be a combination of two workshops that Ferrara offers:
1. Classical Guitar and MIDI: More Than an Effects Box, and
2. Improvisation for Classical Guitarists: Rockin' the Nylon String

Ferrara will walk the audience through the creation of soundscapes featuring layers of sound built up by assigning various MIDI sounds to the strings of the guitar and blending them with the natural sound of the guitar. He will perform pieces and deconstruct them illustrating the methods used in their creation. In addition Ferrara will discuss the history of fretted instrument improvisation from medieval times to the present and relate the techniques to modern classical guitar technique.

Russell Ferrara is a 30 year veteran of the Philadelphia music scene. He was a founding member of The Philadelphia Guitar Ensemble which produced on eponymous album. An interest in synthesizers controlled from guitar fingerboards led him to found the New Age/Electronica group Shadowdancer which produced one album "Hole In Their Heads" which will be available at the workshop.
