CIRCUS GIRL
Circus Girl, the first play of new theatre company The Hat Tree Theatricals, opens June 6 The Hat Tree Theatricals will premiere Circus Girl, their first play, at the Museum of Human Achievement June 6-16. In this by turns fantastical and grittily realistic play, which draws on the style of Brechtian Epic Theatre with dance and music, the eponymous Circus Girl embarks on a journey through the troubled yet beautiful world of 1890s America. The audience follows the story of this young performer, who has spent her entire life in the circus, from Kansas City to Chicago to Denver. Circus Girl knows very little about the outside world, and suddenly has to fend for herself in rapidly changing and precarious surroundings. Writer/director Rocky Hopson and actress/producer Michelle Keffer have gathered a talented cast and crew to bring to life the atmosphere of the 1890s. The despair of the Panic of 1893 and the sense of wonder of the Chicago World's Fair present a timely mirror for the hopes and turmoils we encounter in 2013. Circus Girl is the second in a trilogy of circus-themed plays by seasoned playwright Hopson. The play is a kind of Reverse Alice in Wonderland, an Anti-Doll's House that enacts the struggle between fantasy and reality. Hopson's last work in Austin, with his own RoHo Theatre Co., was La Putain Avec Les Fleurs. Performed in Austin in 2005 and 2007, it received two B. Iden Payne nominations for best musical production and best set. La Putain Avec Les Fleurs went on a tour from Austin to Kansas City to Orlando to Toronto, Ontario, and back to Texas State University. The venue for the premiere of Circus Girl, the first production of Hopson's new company The Hat Tree Theatricals, is the Museum of Human Achievement. It is a multifunctional show space off of Springdale Rd. in East Austin, next to the Blue Genie and Blue Theatre (http:// themuseumofhumanachievement.com/).
