Antara Bhardwaj // Sangam: the union of dance & music
Sangam is a melange of classical Indian dance (kathak) & music by fiery next generation artists. Kathak is not only characterized by its fiery footwork, lightning pirouettes, and dramatic story-telling, but is heavily rooted in its music, as the dancer becomes her own instrument, and her own vocal accompanist. Antara Bhardwaj, disciple of Pandit Chitresh Das, is one of the most dynamic artists of this generation of classical Indian dancers. Bhardwaj is known not only for her grace, and strong abhinaya (story-telling) but complements her dance as an accomplished vocalist. Through Saraswati vandana, invocation to the goddess of music & learning, exploration of the technical & rhythmic complexities in the highly stylized thaat, and the innovation of Kathak Yoga where the boundaries between dance and music are further dissolved as the dancer becomes her own instrument. Bhardwaj culminates in a classic thumri, or stylized love-ballad, disseminating the boundaries of what is dance, what is music. Also featuring one of the most sought-after young percussionists of this generation, Salar Nader, disciple of Ustad Zakir Hussain. Nader showcases a traditional tabla solo, and accompanies in the challenging context of a traditional Kathak solo Nader and Bhardwaj flow in improvisation, playing within their common language of music & rhythm in a friendly banter of sawal-jawab, question & answer. Additionally, Sangam features internationally renowned sitar player, harmonium player and music composer, Jayanta Banerjee of Kolkata. A performer who has accompanied some of India's top artists, Banerjee is an additional highlight to this lineup of artists. Sangam takes the viewer through an immersion of music, rhythm, and movement, by artists with a unique voice in their respective art forms.
