South Lake Union Discovery Talks: The Accidental Urban Environmentalist
The second talk in the South Lake Union Discovery Talks series, "The Accidental Urban Environmentalist," takes place on the evening of July 24 and will feature Kirk Meyers, corporate social responsibility manager from REI and Margaret Montgomery, sustainability leader with NBBJ. Both will talk about the intersection of environmental sustainability, personal health and recreation, and how the places we live, the products we use and the services we depend on can be designed to promote a healthier and more sustainable world. Rachel Belle, of KIRO radio will serve as the moderator.

Accidental environmentalism is the practice of engaging in behaviors or activities that lessen one's environmental footprint without the conscious intention of being "green".  In urban environments this occurs when people live, work or otherwise spend time in neighborhoods that are designed with the environment in mind. Accidental environmentalism also occurs when we purchase products or services designed to reduce environmental impacts and/or increase social equity. Given the neighborhood's sustainable attributes, and the presence of businesses dedicated to sustainability, people who live, work, visit or shop in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood often engage in accidental environmentalism.

Ideally situated on the on north end of Seattle's commercial business district, South Lake Union is unique among the city's neighborhoods as it boasts three city parks, access to Lake Union and downtown Seattle, and is accessible by various forms of transit. With a high walkability score and a significant concentration of sustainable commercial, office and multi-family architecture, South Lake Union is the region's only LEED-ND neighborhood. The community also boasts over 40 health, wellness, and cross-training facilities, along with numerous locally owned restaurants and shops.

Evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with bites and wine by Portage Bay. This event is open to the public.
