THE WOODCUTTER and THE RIVER GODDESS
Indian dance, music, & visual design by Rangoli Dance Company and guest dancers from India including Renjith Babu Choorakkad and Parshwanath Upadhye.
A universal story of temptation, honesty, and the consequences of choice, THE WOODCUTTER and THE RIVER GODDESS teaches the value of honesty in our daily lives. Adapted and inspired by Aesop's Fables, Jataka Tales, and similar stories from India, Tibet, Thailand, China, and Nigeria, the Rangoli Dance Company explores this life lesson with creative passion and fresh insight!
GANESHA is one of the most popular Gods in India, who bestows good luck on new ventures, significant events, and journeys. As the God of wisdom and remover of obstacles, Ganesha reminds us of the importance of dedication to duty, parents' love for their children, and compassion. Join Rangoli Dance Company as we tell the legend of Ganesha's birth, and celebrate the auspicious prosperity that he brings to life!
Choreographer Malathi Iyengar is the recipient of the 2013 C.O.L.A Choreography Fellowship from the City of Los Angeles and the 2010 Lester Horton Award for Outstanding Achievement in World Dance for her choreography 'Shivaya'. Iyengar is a recipient of numerous awards for her choreographic works and is recognized as a Master Artist of Bharatanatyam dance by the Alliance for California Traditional Artists.
Established in 1985, The Rangoli Foundation celebrated a significant milestone of 25 years of creativity and artistic excellence in 2010. In recognition, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department have honored Rangoli Foundation with a Certificate and Resolution.
This dance concert is supported in part by the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Barnsdall Gallery Theatre is a facility of the City of Los Angeles.
