Synopsis: On September 4, 1984, democracy movement leader Kim Jong Tae (Park Won Sang) is arrested and taken to an infamous interrogation facility in Namyeong-dong. For the next 22 days, he would be cruelly and continuously tortured in all manners by interrogators intent on forcing him to confess to communist collaboration.

National Security is the controversial prison drama based on the real-life memoirs of late democracy activist and politician Kim Geun Tae. The critically acclaimed film portrays the torture endured by Kim when he was illegally arrested during the Chun Doo Hwan regime. Park Won Sang, who played the defense attorney in Unbowed, takes the leading role as Kim, while veteran actor Lee Kyung Young co-stars as the main torturer. Hard-hitting and uncompromising, the film is a painful and powerful indictment against Korea's former authoritarian regime and human rights abuses in the name of National Security.

"National Security is one such picture from South Korea, an entirely sincere and dignified effort by Chung Ji-young, who directed the courtroom drama Unbowed last year. He and his small, on-target cast are so successful in depicting the horrors undergone by young pro-democracy political prisoners..." Deborah Young - Hollywood Reporter.

"Breaking a 13-year helming hiatus in 2011 with the provocative courtroom drama "Unbowed," respected director Chung Ji-young appears to have made "National Security" in the national interest. Unsparing in its re-creation of appalling practices that took place in his homeland until just 25 years ago, the pic conveys a blunt message: "This happened before and must never happen again." - Richard Kuipers - Variety.

"A film based on the memoir of a democracy activist who was tortured in the 1980s by South Korea's military rulers is provoking discussion about the country's not-so-distant authoritarian past and the influence it will have on this year's presidential election." - Sam Kim - Huffington Post.
