Newton Baroque will present a concert of arias from Philipp Heinrich Erlebach's spectacular Harmonische Freude musikalischer Freunde of 1697. Paired with these arias are works from his 1694 collection of sonatas. These sonatas are on par with the best of Buxtehude's offerings in the same genre, and the Lieder are certainly among the best of the century, yet these works are rarely performed. Erlebach, the Kapellmeister to the Thuringian Court, was among the more prolific and successful German composers active in the late 17th century, but is undeservedly not as familiar to modern audiences as most of his output (over a thousand compositions) was destroyed in a fire in 1735.
