First Annual Folkloric and Traditional Dance Conference and Workshop Series
with the Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York
"La Guelaguetza and the Folkloric Dance of Oaxaca"
As part of the 30th Anniversary Season, the Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York (BFMNY)
will host this important dance conference and workshop series. Distinguished International
teacher and artist from Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, Héctor Hernández Villar, will lead three days of
workshops on the dance and history of La Guelaguetza, Oaxaca's world renowned cultural
festival. Participants will enjoy a daily three-hour workshop that includes a lecture and dance
lesson with practice. In addition, there will be an exhibit of traditional dress from México in
Casa Puebla's Gallery during the three day event.
The Workshops and conference will take place at Casa Puebla New York, on the Upper West
Side of Manhattan and is locally presented by the Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York's
Artistic Director José Refugio Gonzalez and staff. The suggested donation is $25.00 per
participant per day or $60.00 for the three days, a 20% discount. This event is made possible by
the generous support of Casa Puebla NY and Brooklyn Arts Council. IMPORTANT NOTE - THE
SUGGESTED DONATION IS EXCLUSIVE FOR BALLET FOLKLORICO MEXICANO DE NUEVA YORK,
CASA PUEBLA NEW YORK DOES NOT RECIEVE ANY DONATION ON OUR BEHALF OR FROM DE
PARTICIPANTS OF THE WORKSHOP .

About La Guelaguetza Festival:
La Guelaguetza is an annual cultural event in México, and takes place in the city of Oaxaca, as
well as in nearby villages, during the month of July.
The celebration centers on Oaxaca's diverse traditional dance in costume, and includes walking
band parades, native food, artisanal textiles and pottery.
Each costume and dance represents a community with its distinct history and rich culture.
About Us
The Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York is a non-profit organization committed to sharing
Mexican traditions and cultural heritage by showcasing regional dances with the New York
community. The BFMNY has performed in world renowned halls in front of enthusiastic
audiences throughout the northeast. BFMNY has performed in important venues such as
Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Madison Square Garden. In addition, BFMNY is a proud
supporter and performer for countless festivals and community events, and is a recipient of the
Brooklyn Arts Council 2013 Community Arts Fund grant. During this 30th anniversary season,
BFMNY will present its first Guelaguetza festival beginning with the May conference and
workshops series and culminating with New York City's own Guelaguetza cultural festival and
presentation at the end of July.

"La Guelaguetza y la Danza Folklórica y Tradicional de Oaxaca"
En el marco de la Temporada del 30 Aniversario, el Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York
será el anfitrión de esta importante serie de conferencias y talleres de danza. Héctor
Hernández Villar, profesor y artista internacionalmente distinguido originario de Tuxtepec,
Oaxaca, impartirá tres días de talleres sobre la danza e historia de La Guelaguetza festival
cultural de renombre mundial del estado mexicano de Oaxaca. Los participantes disfrutarán de
talleres de tres horas que incluye una plática y clase de baile diaria. Además habrá una
exposición de trajes típicos de Oaxaca en la Galería de Casa Puebla New York durante los 3 días
del evento.
El taller y la conferencia se llevarán a cabo en Casa Puebla, que se encuentra en el noroeste de
Manhattan y está localmente organizado por el Director Artístico del Ballet Folklórico Mexicano
de Nueva de York: José Refugio González y el equipo de trabajo del BFMNY. La donación
sugerida es de $25.00 por participante por día ó $ 60.00 por los tres días (un descuento del
20%). Este evento es patrocinado por Casa Puebla New York y Brooklyn Arts Council.

Acerca de La Guelaguetza:
La Guelaguetza es un evento anual del estado de Oaxaca que se celebra durante el mes de julio
y tiene lugar en la ciudad de Oaxaca, así como en los pueblos cercanos.
La celebración se enfoca en bailes tradicionales en trajes típicos e incluye desfiles con bandas
de música, comida típica, exposición de tejidos artesanales y cerámica regional. Cada traje y
danza representa una comunidad con su historia distinta y rica cultura.

El Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York (BFMNY) es una organización sin fines de lucro
comprometido a promover la cultura y tradiciones mexicanas en Nueva York a través de sus
bailes típicos regionales. El BFMNY se ha presentado en centros artísticos y culturales de
renombre mundial y distinguidos del noreste de los Estados Unidos. El BFMNY ha presentado
varias obras en salas como el Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center y Madison Square Garden. El Ballet
Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York está orgulloso de colaborar en innumerables festivales y
eventos locales para el desarrollo y progreso de la comunidad hispana de Nueva York, y está
orgulloso de recibir el patrocinio del Consejo de las Artes de Brooklyn para el 2013. Durante
esta temporada del 30 aniversario, el BFMNY presentará su primer festival Guelaguetza,
iniciando con el Taller y Conferencia en mayo y culminando con la presentación de la
Guelaguetza en julio.
