Masquerade is the second photo exhibition by French-Caribbean photographer Jacky Gotin. Masquerade debuted in Baie-Mahault, Guadeloupe in 2010. Masquerade emanated from Jacky Gotin asking the simple, yet complicated question: Who am I? Masquerade represents Gotin's visual articulation of how we maneuver through diverse social milieu adorning various masks. Masquerade invites us to interrogate how the masks we adorn convey a manufactured presentation-of-self and they simultaneously enable us to disguise or to lose our authentic identity. Masquerade takes the viewer on a temporal journey that begins in the mysteriousness of the dusk of day and concludes in the familiar silence of the dawn. As we move through these moments in the day, we encounter a panoply of masks that signifies both the Afro-diasporic importance of masks and the complicated ways that African-descendant people must perform in a masquerade orchestrated by their quest for self-actualization and for reclaiming their true essence.
