Luncheon Keynote Tyrone Howard, Ph.D. "Awakening the Genius Within: Motivating, Inspiring & Empowering Black Youth"
Tyrone C. Howard, Ph.D is a professor and faculty at UCLA, as well as the Director of Center X and the Founder and Director of the Black Male Institute (BMI), both at UCLA. His work focuses on the social and political context of schools, urban education, and social studies education with a focus on the educational experience of African American students. Dr. Howard is also the Faculty Associate Director for the Academic Advancement Program at UCLA, which is the nation's premier student retention program for underrepresented students. He is the author of the book, "Why Race and Culture Matters in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in America's Classrooms." He is one of the most renowned scholars on educational equity, the African American educational experience, Black males, and urban schools!

Workshop I: It Takes a Village, Creating Pathways Back to the Community
Fact: African American children constitute less than 5% of Washington State's child population, they are disproportionately represented in both the child welfare system (more than 30% in Seattle/King County) & the juvenile justice system (19% are residents of JRA's Greenhill School). This session describes BCDI-Seattle's exciting collaborationNeighborhood by Neighborhood, an initiative to link youth with community reentry information, mentoring, &employment readiness resources to support successful community reconnections. Join us for an engaging dialogue about community empowerment in the spirit of Kujichaguliaself-determination!

Workshop II: Why Race & Culture Matter in Schools? Closing the Achievement Gap in America's Classroom
In Seattle, African-American high school students are suspended or expelled more than 3 times as often as other students. In middle school, it is greater, with Blacks 3 1/2 times more likely to be disciplined! Come to this workshop to learn strategies & focus on ways to adopt a greater awareness & comprehension of how race & culture can improve educational outcomes, to help in closing the achievement gap in K-12!

We will share with you our initial plan for the Early Learning Academy & want to hear your valuable suggestions and feedback!

Often times we hear a lot about the statistics & numerous challenges facing African American youth, but what about the programs out there working to counteract these challenges for Black youth in this area? Come & hear from a youth panel speak about these programs made available for them and how it positively impacted their lives! There will also be an opportunity to get information about these programs as well. Presenters: TAFT (Technology Access Foundation), Portfolio Project & ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) from the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
