Laysa Issam al Fannan will be presenting an art exhibit and installation for the First Thursday Art Walk in The Pearl, on August 1, 2013, featuring unorthodox art for the open minded.
Disillusioned with the religion business after more than thirty years as a clergyman, Laysa left the church and vowed to speak only through his art - a practice that he calls "TRUE ARTIFICE."
Steeped in the symbols and semantics of religious orthodoxy, Laysa's art surgically dissects the folly of priest craft with the ordained authority of an 'insider' and the Duchampian impudence of an excommunicated heretic. Dogma has finally been muzzled by someone who knows where all the bones are buried.
His engaging oeuvre exhibits ample evidence of many solitary years spent honing not only the craft of painting and sculpture but also a profoundly cerebral wit that pierces even the most entrenched hypocrisy and superstition. Laysa's work slices effortlessly through the perilous minefields of our religious, artistic and political conventions with multilayered humor and gentle ambiguity. And...before anyone notices...the sacred cows have all been milked.
KILL ANOTHER EVERGREEN FOR CHRIST will be Laysa's only Pacific Northwest appearance this year. Along with many of his large scale paintings, the pop up art exhibition will premier the Portland-inspired installation - "Sacred Grove's Last Stand - Stumptown 2013"
There will also be a disemboweled piñata of the Virgin Mary and an eight foot tall, coin operated "Venerometer" that will enable a select number of guests to broadcast their prayers via satellite dish and receive an answer almost instantly.
