A two-day seminar and workshop on cemetery preservation, especially gravestones, to be held in Woodstock, Connecticut. The first day (November 2) will begin with an introduction to Woodstock's nine cemeteries and then continue with Ruth Shapleigh-Brown, the organizer of the Connecticut Gravestone Network, talking about Connecticut's burying grounds and cemeteries, symbolism and carver identification. She will then move into basic care of gravestones, including low-tech conservation do's and dont's. After lunch we will have a walking tour of the Woodstock Hill Burying Ground (c. 1686) and then split into smaller groups for a workshop of hands-on-basic techniques.
On the second day (November 9), Jonathan Appell, Gravestone Conservator, will talk about advanced conservation and cleaning techniques. Jonathan has been working in fields relating to gravestones and monuments for over 25 years and has hosted numerous training seminars and workshops. Ted Kinnari, the inventor of D/2 Biological Solution, a widely-used anti-biological cleaner, will discuss its use. The workshop will continue in the afternoon.
While we can accommodate up to 150 people, the workshop is strictly limited to 50 participants.
