Candace and Russell have created a program which reflects the restless spirit of American creativity. Sidney Lanier, steeped in European culture, drew inspiration from Nature's melodies. Justin Holland, born a free Black man in Virginia, reached deep into European culture to become the most important American classical guitarist of his time. Both sons of the 19th century South and both imbued with the characteristic American desire to cross that next boundary. Gwyneth Walker, very much alive and working in Connecticut, has steadfastly walked her own uniquely American path within a musical academia obsessed with European atonal abstraction. Candace and Russell round out their program with their own undeniably American voices, blending the composed with the improvised, the ancient with the modern and the acoustic with the electronic.
