In 1973 a small group of activists in Jamaica Plain began organizing tenants unions and blocking evictions. Since then, City Life/Vida Urbana has grown into the leading voice for housing justice in Boston and beyond.
In these 40 years, while the organization worked on education, labor, health, and youth issues, housing justice remained a central mission. As the 2007/08 financial crisis unleashed a wave of foreclosures, resisting post-foreclosure evictions has become a major focus.
Having a tenured history in eviction defense and tenant protection, City Life/Vida Urbana's organizing model was featured in national media outlets including PBS, the New York Times, and others. This wave of national attention spurred the creation of nine replication sites throughout New England and several others across the country.
Since 2007, through hundreds of eviction blockades, other direct actions, and court settlements, over 100 Boston families have won the right to remain in their homes. Equally important, a new generation of grassroots community leaders has emerged from these struggles.
So with pride in the past, and hope for the future, we announce our 40th Anniversary Celebration:
