The Outer Self: A Writing Workshop
When I tell people that I don't watch the news, I love to examine their faces. They often respond as though I am irresponsible or a bit soft on the brain.
I actively do not watch the news because I reserve the right to control what enters my consciousness and takes up residence there. I have learned from watching television that a powerful story or character can become a visceral and magnified entity in my spirit, and that I will often worry about the outcome for a fictional character for days on end.
Thus I watch the news infrequently for so much of it is resoundingly bad. Events are sifted through and only the most horrific presented for our consumption.
In this workshop, we counter passive reception of what is forced into our eardrums with conscious responses to news articles that move us, touch us, and awaken our deepest abilities to bond with humans in our own communities and those at a distance looking too into our worlds and worrying about what they see.
